G20-India-Summit

How India’s G20 Presidency fulfilled its Objectives?

G20 in India was a mega success for the country as well as for the world. Bold initiatives were taken by the head of states of all countries which signifies why G20 was established. 20 powerful economies gathered under one roof for “One Earth, One Family ,One Future” which was India’s G20 motto and Delhi Declaration was adopted by every member of the group.

India’s G20

The Power-packed summit was held on 9th-10th September 2023 at Bharat Mandapam of Pragati Maidan. This was one of the most successful summits held till date. Decisions for growth, climate change, terrorism neutralization, food security, inflation were taken by 20 most powerful economies of world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting. He tried to portray India as one of the key partner of Supply chain, World economy. He also raised the voice of Global South and the problems being faced by them in front of G20 leaders.
However, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped their presence from the summit by sending their Foreign Minister and Prime Minister respectively.
Russian President didn’t come because he was facing backlash with the West in Ukraine and the Mighty Russian Federation which made plans to thrash Ukraine within a week, its now more than 550+ days, thanks to West. So, due to this embarrassment, he skipped India’s G20 which is pre-dominant by West.
Chinese President skipped because he was angry with Indian government for organizing some meetings of G20 in J&K and Arunachal Pradesh which China acclaims to be a disputed land. One more reason is arrogance as well because Xi Jinping wants to portray himself as the most powerful world leader than President Joe Biden and he knows very well that India would give utmost value to U.S. President in comparison to any global leader. So, this can hinder his world leader image. That’s why during G20 summit, he held meetings with those countries in China which were trapped by their debt like Zambia, Venezuela.
However United States strongly backed India, P.O.T.U.S Extended his days of stay to 3 and supported India on every decision.

Boosting Global trust deficit into Confidence

Due to Covid-19 and Ukraine war, global trust among the powerful countries of world has depleted to the lowest level like between the China and Russia with the West and vice versa.
India being the single country in the world which has similar relations with West and Russia has tried to bolster their relations by establishing talk and diplomacy network. India also lauded that for global good, countries should come together and show confidence in each other so that it can benefit our future generation.

Inclusion of African Union in G20

CPEC’s nightmare stone has been laid down by India,Middle-East and Europe. They all signed agreements to build mega corridor which will connect them through waterways, railways, etc for smooth and safe trading routes. This is considered to be a competitor of China’s B.R.I project which is still direction-less. U.S.A President was very excited for the project even though american continent was not included in the corridor because this will decrease India’s dependency on Iran and Russia as India was all set to garnish Chabahar Port which is a win-win situation for U.S in Geopolitics. They also signed PG2(Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment) for fulfilling infrastructure gaps worldwide and India promised to fill the gap in Global South countries. This corridor will attract small countries to join it, rather B.R.I because it is for there development not a debt trap.

They also pledged to fight with it and expressed their concern on money laundering, illicit trafficking and diversion of small arms and light weapons. They committed to support F.A.T.F by increasing there resource needs.
Pointing towards territorial integrity, all states agreed to support each other’s territorial boundaries and will strongly condemn if any country will try to breach it. This call on also hinted Russia’s invasion in Ukraine and China’s expansion with all its neighbours. We all are also familiar about China’s ideology of encroaching neighbouring countries land and claiming whole South-China Sea’s minerals, gases, islands, etc.

Climate Change

India's-G20

The P.O.T.U.S and P.M of India announced $1 billion fund for renewable energy infrastructure. New Delhi has always been vocal to developed countries to invest in green technology of developing countries so that they can fight with the climate change. The funding from U.S is being done so that India can reduce the cost of capital and accelerate deployment of greenfield renewable energy, battery storage and emerging green tech projects. Both sides also decided to support a payment security mechanism bringing public and private funds to accelerate acquisition of Made in India electric buses to decarbonize the transport sector.

Adoption of Delhi Declaration

Delhi Declaration was adopted unanimously after lots of tussle between West and Russia in deciding how Ukraine War will be depicted in the Declaration. However, India tried to safeguard Russia by all means in the summit by excluding mention of Russia’s invasion, War like words from the declaration. When Indian foreign minister S.Jaishankar was asked regarding no mention of Russia-Ukraine War in the declaration, he simply replied “Bali was Bali, This is Delhi”. One of the major reason for not mentioning Russia’s cruelty in Declaration can be there warnings of not signing the documents if they will be harassed.
But, due to hard work of Team India, all Countries consensus on the New Delhi G20 Summit Leaders Declaration.

Conclusion of the Global Event

  • The amount of importance India gave to U.S.A in the summit signals that India may have chosen a side, i.e, the side of west for future growth. The United States has emerged as the closest, strongest and believable ally of India whom Indians weigh more important than Russia.
